Fort Myers was built along the Caloosahatchee river as one of the first bases of operations during the Seminole Indian Wars, and named after Colonel Abraham C. Myers. The fort was later disassembled and parts of it used to build some of the first downtown buildings.
Some of the first inhabitants of Fort Myers were in the winter home of Thomas A. Edison. Later on, Henry Ford became another famous resident of Fort Myers. Be sure to visit the Edison & Ford Winter Estates and see the beauty and elegance of these historic homes.
